Who has to take the civic exam?
Since January 1, 2026, the civic exam is mandatory for three procedures. Each track has its own difficulty level, and our practice adapts to yours.
Multi-year residence permit (CSP)
To obtain a carte de séjour pluriannuelle, you must show a basic knowledge of the values and workings of the French Republic.
Resident card (CR)
The 10-year carte de résident requires an intermediate level: institutions, rights and duties, life in French society.

Naturalisation demands the highest level: history, culture, republican principles and how they apply to everyday life.

What is the French civic exam?
It is an official 40-question exam (28 knowledge questions and 12 real-life scenarios) testing your knowledge of France's values, institutions and everyday life. It lasts 45 minutes and is taken in French.
Who has to take it?
Since January 1, 2026, it is mandatory when applying for a multi-year residence permit (CSP), a resident card (CR) or French naturalisation (NAT). The difficulty rises with the procedure; naturalisation is the most demanding.
Where do you take the exam?
In person, at an approved exam centre. The two state-approved operators, Le français des affaires (CCI Paris Île-de-France) and France Éducation International, each publish a directory of their centres, and you pick your centre, date and time slot during online registration. What score do you need to pass?
You need at least 32 correct answers out of 40, which is 80%. Each correct answer is worth 1 point; a wrong or blank answer scores 0.
What happens if I fail?
